Bravo!

[edit]

I am indebted to you, for two reasons: 1) Helping me solve me "open problem". 2) Breaking up the intense boredom of study by me being obligated to come over and thank you. XD Thanks. So much. I'm serious, I don't believe I've ever had a boreder day. :D Except for the fact of your on-going RfA. Wish you the best, you deserve it. Not sure what was going on in the oppose section? It definately is not valid. You have a head on your shoulders...I forgive Sango for starting your RfA a week from when my wisdom teeth are coming out. It's okay, even though I'll be sick and half insane, I will do my best to pull the laptop out of the bag and see the victory party begin. begin William Tell Overture....drumroll!!!!...--ViolinGirl 20:13, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PS With RfA in progress, don't feel responsible for messing up my page. I don't want to get you into trouble. :) --ViolinGirl 20:14, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Banes, I so very much want to support your adminship, and I'm sure your going to be making an effort to improve with warning vandals. I saw your comments to ViolinGirl, 1. The serious vandals ignore them. 2. While I'm busy editing their talk page they are elsewhere vandalizing, and I'm not reverting. 3. I get annoyed because I might put up six "stop else I'll block you" templates, and as I'm not an admin, it would be an empty threat. I have on occasion asked an admin friend/an admin....to block If your adminship fails, I doubt that it will though :-D (though I voted with a weak oppose I would like to see you make it, how redundant is that? lol) I'll be more than happy to block a vandal who has exceeded his warning thresold for the day. To your 3 points, I agree with 2 very much it is tiresome and annoying but for now it is the best way to go in my opinion. Your first point is also sadly true, but sometimes you do get those vandals that get a change of heart, or just don't know any better, I've warned vandals that had a large history of vandalism, but had not been warned before, and they have said they were sorry. Most important I had not seen any vandalism from them either since the warning. Even though it is a dire task it has it's rewards! For your third point have you tried posting them at WP:AIAV or try getting on an IRC channel for vandalism and requesting the block? I know you have not asked, but I've seen you around and I think you are a great wikipedian, so I hope that you will take these tidbits of advice/info to heart and apply them. You might be surprised with the results! KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 06:54, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like to say also that warnings DO work. Assuming good faith until proven otherwise, or even longer, has suprised me in how it encourages editors to use good faith. Welcome them to the W'pedia, tell them why their edits aren't wanted. I'd be happy - no, eager - to support your RFA after that. --DDerby-(talk) 07:11, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Your demeanor about this whole situation is very commendable, as for a possible withdrawal of your RfA, I'd personaly like to see it stay! I'll continue to check your contribs and to see if your warning vandals properly and efficiently. The biggest issue is of course your admited lack of unserstanding for warning vandals. I'm sure I'm not going to be the only one whose vote might change if you show that you can warn users, and comprehend the process. If I might help this link might help you understand when to warn vandals properly. Cheers. KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 08:47, 26 January 2006 (UTC) :-D[reply]
Psalm 63:8
Hey, Banes, you're doing so well! Don't let the stress get to you, I kind of sense that you're having a tough time. I totally understand about this...I didn't even want you to, because of reasons previously discussed. Have a nice rest of the day...(I still can't get used to the fact that it's already 3PM, and I've just started my day....:D) --ViolinGirl 13:08, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow...I didn't even realize you were thinking of getting out and in what sense, I still don't know...some enlightening would be nice, but not neccesary. I don't know how God is leading you in this...maybe He wants you "out", maybe he wants you to stay, I wouldn't know. (I'm not trying to sound superficially spiritual or artificially religious when I say...) whatever He leads you to do will be best, though. I am confident of that. May He keep you in His path...(and let me know what's going on sometime, okay?)--ViolinGirl 15:56, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, so pulling out of the RfA, not wikibreak or wikileave? Just clarifying...--ViolinGirl 16:06, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
PS Hope nothing I said up there offended you...?
No, no, it's 200% okay. I understand about being short, since you're leaving, and everything. I understand completely...(just don't forget to still smile every so often...;)) Have a fun time, wherever you're going...Cheers!--ViolinGirl 16:10, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Going out. As in, out the door, jacket, etc...or whatever. Re:smilies...you know, we Christian Hedonists get a little worried whenever someone doesn't use enough grins...see you around, Banes...--ViolinGirl 16:15, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Don't you touch that! I'm going to be working on it someday!!!! ;) Cheers!--ViolinGirl 16:20, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Protected areas

Banes, I wanted to discuss the protected areas project as far as the South African articles and sent you a few links by email to help get you started. Let me know if I can be of any help.--MONGO 01:27, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New headline same topic :-D

[edit]

The conversation above was getting out of hand in terms of length and what not! :-D As to this warning well generally the {{bv}} template is used as a first warning for users who are blatantly over the line, i.e. gross and very offensive vandalism, that deserves just 1 warning then then a block, or a legitimate request for a block. (For example please forgive my crudness: EXAMPLE BELOW!) Also it is a warning and a welcome, so it also is more of a first warning. I personaly would not have warned him after he received his "final warning". I would have listed him at AIAV, a IRC channel, or an admin's talk page. And continued to revert his vandalism until the block took place.

For an example if a user has made lets say 4 edits, all vandalism, and they range in the "Hi this place sucks" to the mundane :-P such as "People like to eat purple candy flavored kittys" those in my opinion deserve a test1 test2 and maybe an {{anon}} in there if its an anon. Now an example where {bv} should be used, again forgive me, and feel free to remove these comments after you have looked at them if you wish! Lets say a user has made again 4 edits, and has not been warned, but his edits range in the hateful to the downright disgusting. Such as "Fuck gays and Jews and all the niggers in the world." To something like "I fucked a giant last night, and it was fucking great assholes." (I don't know if anyone has ever uttered that phrase until now ;-D) Anything along that lines I'd say a bv warning is a-ok :-D Cheers KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 19:01, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes that sounds about right. With regards to the "Its those sort of people (the latter ones) who I would not say "welcome to wikipedia!" to" I agree but it does come down to civility, almost along the lines of "don't insult the vandals". Its not an insult, but even convicts, gets welcomed to prison! :-D Besides that point I would also use bv to a user who blanks pages at a high speed, yet has never been warned! I stress the never been warned area! If you ever have questions or need help I'd like to let you know my talk page is open! (I hope the same goes for you :-D) KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 19:28, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Admin coaching

[edit]

Hi, Banes. No need to thank the nominator; you deserve adminship. :) As for admin coaching, would you mind taking a glance over at User talk:Gryffindor#Admin coaching? I still have the Goo and Foo situation recorded, so do you want to start with that?

And I do hope you're all right. Best wishes, Sango123 (talk) 21:13, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the tip on how to find typos ^^. Though, I'm finding that in most pages downwards of the featured articles, there's almost always a little something of a typo or grammar "oops" here or there to munch on. Concerning poetry, yes, ViolinGirl's poem is beautiful (and can only get better ^^), but I don't know about calling yours "nonsense." My theory is that there is "poetry unto beauty," true, but also "poetry unto hilarity." And unto deep thinking, and unto tribute, etc, etc. And while a (book of) humorous poem(s) probably would have a harder time winning its writer a Nobel Prize in Literature than would, say, a large portfolio of beautiful poems, the former can more easily (and perhaps more importantly) make your friends laugh :D.

And I suspect that it'd be relatively easier to weave, say, a hidden political agenda into a funny poem XD. For example, I could easily see a poem explaining exactly why Mr. Mugabe is a buffoon ^_^ which may be the reason why some despots had all of the poets of their era executed, if I remember correctly XD

I have heard very good things about the Bromeliad trilogy, and will definitely read them as soon as time and space allow me to do so. Speaking of which--is it just an illusion that some of the good people here seem to have, erm, countless free hours with which they Wiki? That is to more plainly ask, "Where does all that time come from!?" ^_^ Hem, hem. I'm sure the answer will come to me sooner or later. Anyway, it's been great talk:ing with you! ^^ Weien 08:31, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Your doing a good job warning vandals! If I may offer two suggestions, (I'll decide support, oppose, or neutral, just before the deadline! :-D) When warning a vandal that already has been warned you don't have to use a : to space the warning out.

Example:[2] and this [3] Please note that you did nothing wrong and it hurts not a thing. It's just easier right?

Example 2. [4] this warning is great except you have gone back to a test1. Even if it is a new month the user does have a history of vandalism. So I would have warned with a test2 or 3 but again nothing wrong at all! Feel free to ignore these examples as they really do not affect the efficiency of the process, or your progress for that matter. They are just suggestions! Once you understand when, how, and where to use the warning templates, it is for the most part at your discretion :-D KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 17:32, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

One more thing. {{subst:test1}} , don't forget the subst: when warning! That substitutes, which copies the the warning directly onto the talk page.

Check out [5] click on the edit this page tab and you'll see what I mean. :-D KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 17:46, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, for simple vandalism test1, test2, test3, test4 and when and if you become a admin, test5, test6, {{vblock}} among others. Gross and offensive vandalism gets a bv and then a block if it continues. Page blankers get {{blanking}}, {{blanking2}} {{blanking3}}, and for admins {{blanking4}} . If this becomes unclear just ask and I'll see if I can explain it better! As I am not much of a teacher :-P KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 17:55, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oi vey, lol. I'm going to send you an email :-D KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 18:00, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to message you again! The bv is a welcome and a warning, it should be used as a first warning for offensive and blatant vandalism. KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 18:11, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Banes, regarding the User Page Award program for Esperanza, you have volunteered to be one of the user's to help guide this program to success! An Esperanzial note

[edit]

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Banes, I can't believe I didn't notice until now...[6] And I can't believe I made such a stupid mistake! All my life (until today) I thought it was spelled BRAHAMS...So I get out my CD of the BraHMS concerto, and to my utter embarrassment, it's BRAHMS....thanks...*runs from talk page in embarrassment*--ViolinGirl 19:09, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nope...I'm dead serious, I always thought of him as B-R-A-H-A-M-S instead of B-R-A-H-M-S. Oh well...I still can't quite love the beginning of his violin concerto yet, so...maybe that's why. Thanks again...--ViolinGirl 19:12, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The Brahms concerto??! Wow! Weekend was...fine-ish, although the wiki is still kind of addictive, so I'm working on not being so...hooked, so to speak. Other than that...violin practice was horrible b/c of the test, which I'm afraid I'll have to postpone anyway, just out of lack of knowledge (CLEPs can be taken whenever you want to take them, in my area, but they cost about $90 ea., so I don't really just want to throw away the money like that). So, that's probably more than you wanted to know, but that's how my weekend was, yours?--ViolinGirl 19:19, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
(Gasp! I did it again up there!!! Fixed.) Oh...what Brahms? I find him complex to understand musically right now, but I'm sure I'll get used to him after a while. Sorry about your weekend. Hope the next week is better for you.--ViolinGirl 19:30, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, just noticed your other comment. Well, if I don't take Western Civilization I on Tuesday, then I'll try to take it in one or two weeks. :/ Then, I'm going to try to nail Western Civilization II in a month or less if I can...*sigh* We'll see...the main thing is my wisdom teeth coming out on Wed. that I'm kind of nerved up about.--ViolinGirl 19:32, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm? Writing on Tuesday? My wisdom teeth haven't protruded from the gums yet, and only the two bottom ones are impacted, no full root system yet, (so they say) so it shouldn't be too bad, but it will be my first time under anesthesia, so I'm just ^ that much scared. :) Oh well, I'm sure I'll live...Yes, I took a peek at the userpage award thing...looks good, although people who have Ph as a friend would have an advantage...;) It okay I'm using your pic as a background (for my computer) for now?--ViolinGirl 19:45, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, sounds good. Thanks! I'll take your word re:anesthesia...--ViolinGirl 19:54, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think so...but I'm not positive, maybe not. They said something about "twilight" mode or something? But that's all I know.--ViolinGirl 19:59, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, thanks...(what did you mean by "writing on tuesday?")--ViolinGirl 20:02, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah...poor kid re:sandbox. Have a nice rest of the day, cheers!--ViolinGirl 20:05, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hey Banes, I've been adding additional information and idea's to the Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award. Make sure you check them out! I've also created the judges and nomination templates. They can be renamed to a more sensible name when we are ready to use them. Until then check em out :-D {{userpageaward}} (for nominations) and {{upajudge}} (for judges of course). From your friend, the vandal

[edit]

Hi, thank you for welcoming me. I'm thinking that instead of contributing wisely to this encyclopedic effort, I may try vandalizing for a while to see if it suits my fancy. However, I'm getting my wisdom teeth taken out on Wednesday, and am trying to decide whether or not to take a CLEP exam on Tuesday, so I'm not sure what my final decision is regarding vandalism. However, I wish you all the best, and would vote on your RfA if I had an account....Cheers!--24.58.164.194 01:23, 30 January 2006 (UTC) :D[reply]

Hi, Banes. I'm stealing Phaedriel's header just because I'm too lazy to make my own. Thanks for "welcoming" me, and commenting on my blog, everything. I've decided I'm going to take the test tomorrow, so I'm going to probably be staying up late tonight cramming (and I'm serious, it really is cramming because some of the material I haven't even looked at before). But I appreciate knowing I have your prayers...yikes! I'm scared! I'll probably be on for a bit Wed. so see you then...--ViolinGirl 00:26, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

UPA

[edit]

Hey Banes, firstly congrats on your RfA, I know it is not over but it looks like you got it, great job! (Have a look at the comments section of your RfA...you might want to move a comment to the proper place) Regarding the UPA I like that new design as well. Unfortunately, I have a very busy morning ahead of me so I will not be able to discuss this too much for a while. I urge you to get together with Rune, and Essjay..even CP, FireFox, and Sango123. All the users who have been helping and suggesting ideas! ....I've left this comment to Sango123,sers who win the "UPA" get entered automatically into a separate contest, which will be held monthly. After every 4 contests the winners will be entered and Banes, Rune.welsh, and myself will pick that winner. After that they can no longer go for the award, they can still be a judge, if they haven't already, or if there is not enough judges signed up by the time 15 user pages are nominated. I'll be implementing all this into the UA's pages soon. I'm afraid I have not had time to insert it into the UPA pages yet. Would you work on that please? I'm thinking it should be mentioned on both pages...Wikipedia:Esperanza/Programs#User Page Award and Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award Thanks I'll be back in about 3 hours at the most! KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 11:21, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure about incorporating our sigs into the award yet we were discussing it on IRC when that situation occurred ;-). You don't have to worry about adding the new "once a month" section to the UPA pages if you don't have the time. I'll get started on it in a little while if you haven't. As to adding award ideas by all means add anything you want to the award talk. I just don't want it to be mistaken as a "barnstar". :-D I'll ttyl KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 14:49, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Licinius

[edit]

Hi, don't worry about weird comments from Licinius, as it seems par for the course for him to be exceedingly rude and even a bit paranoid when admins and helpful users are just doing their job or trying to help out. Best to steer way clear and let the admins take care of it, rather than spending any precious time in a situation that's only going to guarantee you'll pull a few dozen hairs out. :P — Impi 14:14, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image tagging

[edit]

I'm afraid that there is no such tags (or none that I know of) that fits the description that you want. The thing is, you want one that states that no one can reuse your image. However, uploading it to Wikipedia means that your work can be distributed to anyone, as it is liscened under the GNU Free Documentation License. The only way to keep the photo to yourself, is by deleting it. If you still want to keep it, the only available tags for such works are Template:GFDL-self or Template:No rights reserved. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia 15:59, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

*bows in the presence of the great administrator* Have you considered putting 2006 Table Mountain fire on Portal:Fire? Just a thought, but I'm not sure how to do it, so refrained myself. --Chipmunk Cheeks 01:07, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, whatever. Just thought you might not have thought of it, and I certainly have no clue right now about that anyway. Re:Chipmunk: It's not my sig...but you know why I signed that way, of course?--ViolinGirl 11:21, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
